What Is A Rhytidectomy?

Facelifts are technically referred to as a “rhytidectomy,” this cosmetic procedure can dramatically improve the appearance of your face. While most people believe this is usually a procedure for an older person – although it can also be useful  for certain people in their 30s and 40s. Facelift surgery aims to rid your face of loose skin and improve various facial lines, including crow’s feet, perioral lines & wrinkles. It can also improve sagging facial skin, a slack jaw, and loose neck skin.

Facelifts do not address the fine lines and wrinkles in your skin. Proper skin care and chemical peels may be of benefit if the surface of your skin is not smooth. In addition, the facelift does not address the upper face and eyes. You may want to consider these areas at the same time as the surgery on your lower face. If laxity of the facial skin is very minimal and you are not yet ready for surgery, a non-invasive treatment called Ultherapy may be an option. This involves using ultrasound waves to tighten the skin without the need for incisions. Ask Dr. Cangello  if you are a candidate for Ultherapy.

The Right Candidate For a Facelift Should…

  • Have good elasticity in their facial skin
  • Be in good physical condition
  • Not smoke
  • Have realistic expectations
  • Be psychologically stable

The Procedure

Dr. Cangello camouflages facelift incisions within hair lines, around the ears or in natural creases already in the body. He then pulls up and tightens the muscles under your skin, trims off the excess and then sutures everything in place with a keen eye for aesthetic beauty. Some patients may desire ancillary procedures in addition to the facelift. And while some patients are on the table, they choose to have other procedures such as- upper and lower eyelid surgery, injectable fillers or fat transfer.

Most facelifts take approximately 4 hours.  depending on the complexity.  Dr. Cangello most frequently performs the procedure under local anesthetic with intravenous sedation. However, general anesthesia is available if you and Dr. Cangello decide that it the best option for your surgery.

Recovery Time

After a facelift, swelling typically disappears within a few days while most bruises are gone within a few weeks. Results usually last seven or more years.
