Male Breast Reduction
Gynecomastia is a condition that results in excess tissue and/or localized fat in one or both male breasts. Men in this situation are usually very self-conscious about their chests, and the emotional discomfort from it can impair their lives in many ways. They are generally reluctant to remove their shirts in front of others, and this embarrassment often causes them to miss out on certain physical activities and intimacy.
There are many causes of gynecomastia; the use of certain medications or drugs, hormonal changes, hereditary conditions, and some diseases may be associated with the enlargement of male breasts. If weight gain or obesity contributes to excess male breast tissue, diet and exercise may help, but for many people this is not enough.
The male breast reduction procedure, also called “gynecomastia surgery” or “reduction mammaplasty,” corrects enlarged or over-developed male breasts. Treatment options include liposuction or excision of the excess tissue. Both options are performed with the patient under either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia.
Gynecomastia Correction With Liposuction
In some cases, liposuction alone may be used to correct gynecomastia. With this method, a thin, hollow tube is moved back and forth through several small incisions in the breasts to loosen and remove excess fat. The incisions are then sutured closed.
- Minimal incisions and, therefore, less scarring
- Shorter procedure time
- Suffer from gynecomastia primarily as a result of excess fatty tissue
- Have skin with good elasticity
- Do not need the size of the areolas reduced
Gynecomastia Correction With Excision
Excision techniques utilize incisions within the natural contours of the chest so that scars will be hidden as inconspicuously as possible. Excess breast tissue and skin are removed through the incisions. This procedure may also include a reduction in the diameter of enlarged areolas (the pigmented skin around the nipples). The nipples and areolas may also be moved to a more natural-looking position if necessary. The incisions are then closed with sutures.
- Removes excess skin along with breast tissue
- Can be combined with liposuction to remove excess fat tissue
- Suffer from gynecomastia mainly as a result of glandular breast tissue
- Have excess skin that needs to be removed
- Desire the areolas to be reduced and/or repositioned
After surgery, the chest will be wrapped with bandages, and a support garment should be worn to reduce postoperative swelling. A thin drainage tube may be placed under the skin to remove any excess fluids. Dr. Cangello and his staff will give you specific instructions to follow to ensure you have a safe and speedy recovery.
