liposuctionHaving a trim and toned physique is something that many people desire. Unfortunately, even after following healthy diet plans and exercise routines, many individuals are still unable to fully get rid of excess fat in certain areas of their body. To safely and effectively eliminate stubborn fat deposits, men and women typically undergo liposuction. Also known as “lipoplasty,” this procedure permanently removes fat cells from the body to provide a slimmer and more contoured physical appearance.

Candidates for Liposuction

Ideal candidates for liposuction are in good emotional health and are at or near their target weight. Individuals undergoing liposuction should not smoke or take blood thinning medications for at least two weeks before surgery.

Liposuction is very effective for removing fat from various areas of the body, including the:

  • Abdomen
  • Back
  • Hips
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Arms
  • Cheeks
  • Neck
  • Chest
  • Calves
  • Ankles

*Liposuction should not be viewed as a weight-loss procedure.

Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction is typically performed on an outpatient basis with the patient under IV sedation or general anesthesia. In certain instances the procedure can be done  under local anesthesia only. After tiny incisions are made in the targeted areas of the body, a small thin tube known as a cannula is inserted under the skin to separate fat cells from other tissue. A vacuum device is then used to permanently remove the fat, and the incisions are closed with sutures.

Recovery From Liposuction

Once the procedure is complete, bandages will be placed over the incisions and compression garments will be applied to reduce bruising and swelling. Although some pain and discomfort will exist during the first few days, prescribed pain medication will help alleviate these symptoms. After about a week of downtime, most patients feel good enough to return to work and resume their normal routine.
