Protrusion and other deformities of the ears can cause low self-esteem and embarrassment. Also known as otoplasty, ear surgery noticeably corrects protrusions and deformities and improves the shape of the ears, leaving individuals with a more pleasing facial appearance. Although this procedure can be performed on people of all ages, it is most frequently performed on patients in their teenage years.
Candidates For Ear Surgery
Good candidates for otoplasty are at least six years of age and in good emotional health with no current chronic ear infections. Individuals undergoing the procedure should not smoke or take any blood thinning medications, such as aspirin, for at least two weeks since this can cause complications with surgery.
Ear surgery is very effective for:
- Reducing prominent ears
- Removing excess ear cartilage
- Reshaping abnormal ear cartilage
Ear Surgery Procedure
Otoplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis with the patient under general anesthesia. Typically, incisions are made inconspicuously in the folds behind the ear where cartilage is removed and/or repositioned. Once a more aesthetically pleasing look is achieved, the incisions are closed with sutures.
Recovery From Ear Surgery
Once the otoplasty procedure is finished, dressings will be placed on the ears, and a protective wrap will be applied to reduce swelling. If pain and discomfort are persistent during the first few days, then prescribed medication can be taken to alleviate these symptoms. After about a week of downtime, most patients feel good enough to return to work and their normal routine.
