What Is Rhinoplasty?

rhinoplastyRhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that alters the shape, appearance, and structure of the nose. It may be conducted for cosmetic reasons, to repair a nose injury, or to correct a birth defect. Sometimes, internal nasal surgeries such as septoplasty and/or turbinectomy are also performed to improve breathing function.

Dr. Cangello customizes the rhinoplasty procedure to meet each patient’s individual needs. The result is a nose of improved size, shape, width, and appearance that blends well with the rest of the facial features.

Benefits of Rhinoplasty

Nose surgery can provide many benefits, including:

  • Improved nose shape, size, width, and appearance
  • Improved facial harmony
  • Improved nasal breathing
  • Reparation of nasal injuries
  • Correction of birth defects
  • Increased confidence and self-esteem

Ideal Candidates

Ideal candidates for rhinoplasty surgery may be any age, although most patients are in their late teen or adult years. Candidates should be healthy, their faces should be completely grown, and their expectations should be realistic.

Rhinoplasty is always personalized to match the patient’s needs, so the exact details of the procedure will be unique each time it is performed. However, there are two general options for how the incisions are placed, and these are referred to as closed rhinoplasty and open rhinoplasty. The surgery typically lasts one to two hours.

Closed Rhinoplasty

Dr. Cangello carefully makes incisions inside the nose so that there is no visible scarring. Swelling will reduce quickly with this technique, but because incisions are made inside the nose, the ability to make dramatic changes in the nasal structure may be limited.

Open Rhinoplasty

Dr. Cangello carefully makes an inconspicuous incision underneath the nose along the columella (the narrow bridge of skin between the nostrils). More significant and precise changes can be made as the skin is lifted to reshape the nasal structures.

Immediately following surgery, the nose is well bandaged and supported by packing or a splint to help it heal. Patients are typically able to return to normal work activities one week after surgery. Most of the swelling will go down within a few weeks and will continue to resolve over the following months. Swelling will fully resolve, and the nose will be completely healed within one year following surgery.

Dr. Cangello uniquely customizes each rhinoplasty procedure so that its benefits are perfectly suited to the patient’s individual needs and desires. The size and shape can be effectively changed as well as the angle, projection, and more. If Dr. Cangello performs septoplasty and/or turbinectomy as well, results will include improved nasal breathing. These results are typically permanent, so you’ll be able to enjoy the benefits of rhinoplasty well into the future.
